September 2008 Horizontal Hold: Vines for Every Garden Layer presented by Linda Beutler
Up is not the only direction in which vines will grow. Many vines can be used on the horizontal plane to soften hard surfaces, bring color to hedges and other unbroken swathes of green, and to knit disparate plants together. If vertical growth isn't an option, some vines make excellent ground cover, and in fact, the flowers of certain vines appear all the more beautiful for seeing down into them.

Linda Beutler has a personal collection of roughly 300 clematis taxa, as well as gardening with many lonicera, lathyrus, and annual vines. She is the author of /Gardening With Clematis/ (Timber Press, 2004), and is an instructor of horticulture at Clackamas Community College. In July 2007 she retired from a 22 year career as a retail florist to become the first curator of the Rogerson Clematis Collection, located at the historic Luscher Farm homestead owned by the City of Lake Oswego. Her second book, /Garden to Vase/, was published through Timber Press in May 2007.
